I need a good light for my AR-15

I have zero experience with tactical weapon mounted lights so i need your recommendations.

would like something which mounts onto my ar-15's handguard (dont have a front grip attached- just vanilla stock). would prefer LED light...

what models are you satisfied with?

what to avoid?

whats best way to mount?

If you plan on this for use on other armed folks, I'd be tempted to just shoot myself and cut out the middle man.

Lights on weapons = targets of opportunity ("I'm right here....shoot me") despite the cool Swat pictures.

this is an excellent point, but iI think t's a risk I must take. the alternative is to turn on the lights in the room I am in which would expose me even worse and reveal that I am armed. At least with the mounted light they could think I'm just waving a flashlight around.

it's just something for home defense. I dont plan on doing something dumb like seeking out intruders in my whole house but in case of danger i need to at least secure the 2nd floor at the staircase- a bottleneck i can easily defend. and I believe it would be best if I didn't turn the lights on.

and unless its a full moon out i've really got the shittiest night vision, perhaps a side effect of my laser eye surgury years back but i dont remember ever having good night vision.

Re: I need a good light for my AR-15

Couple suggetions:

1. Night vision equipment

2. Use a pistol instead, holding in one hand, and a GOOD flashlite, not an LED, but an eye-blinder Surefire with a Xenon bulb and a momentary switch in the other hand...holding the light offside and high away from you.....

3. If you have a known area to defend, consider a set of flood lamps installed either permanent, or set-up as needed hooked to a battery, and aimed in the direction of potential attackers with you behind the lights.

Working on it. I'm trying to save up some dough for a good night vision system. I bought some cheap Russian one couple years ago just to see how it works and if I like it but it's really just a toy and nothing you can use in a serious situation.

Heh, working on this too. I live right by New York City- and the gun laws here are extreme. I started seeking a gun permit last year in June, it took me several months to complete the requirements before I could submit the application. Then they told me not to even bother asking for status on the approval process for 6 months, and that was in late October.

For the purposes of entertainment only and Not to be taken as advice on an actual course of action:

If it were me, I would take a "road trip" to the sunny South, and pick up whatever I wanted in a private sale using the local trading papers....then return home with it and squirrel away until such time as 'Law and Order' no longer existed.

I'd also buy a shotgun for your favorite sport of duck hunting ( I think even NY approves of that, as long as you go out of state, right ? )....something like a Remington 870 with a 26-28" barrel, and a few boxes of #6 or so shot for appearance sake. Then I'd also buy a short ( 18-20" ) barrel to interchange with it, and a BUNCH of 00Buck and store that in a secure, separate location.

Good shotgun in tight quarters beats an AR-15 in most cases.....every pull of the trigger sends 8-12 .30/cal balls downrange in the case of 00Buck

870 express=$199 on sale, 18 inch barrel , 50 bucks or so, that is my setup.. and yes much better than a pistol. Oh and I added a 3 shot extension to it as well, so now I have a 7 shot capacity.

I'm looking at the different surefire G2 models. Check out this page. The great thing about them is, you can decide when to turn it on, or to lockout the on/off all together if you want to make sure you do not give up your position. Mounting a veritical grip allows you to use your thumb on the end cap switch (momentary on). Identifying a target in the dark before you pull the trigger is essential if a friend could be in the area. Whether it's a light on the gun or in your hand.

A couple of vertical grips on this page:

Andy makes some great points.

Regarding "GUN LIGHTS" for defensive situations... Bad idea, the best defense possible is to NOT BE SEEN.
Get up in the middle of the night, go get a glass of water, do that in the dark a hundred or so times, and YOU WILL then KNOW your own house better than anyone else. an intruder WILL be using illumination of some sort, making THE INTRUDER an easy target for you.

Lights on guns = bad idea.. Looks cool, buts that's about it. Know the area you have to defend, and if it's your house--- no excuses... Home defense-- shotgun is the choice backed up with a handgun..
PS... stay away from a pump action, it gives your position away..

Re: I need a good light for my AR-15

I do own a shotgun- it's one of the Russian made Saiga shotguns. Comes with a 5-round magazine. Semi-automatic operation. You can buy 8-round mags and even something like a 25 or 30 round drum for them too, but that's illegal here in the New York.

What I dont like about using the shotgun is it's got a hunting stock (no pistol grip) and to convert the stock to a pistol grip would again be illegal here in New York. It's not very comfortable to operate in this hunting stock configuration, especially in tight quarters like the interior of a house.

Surefire makes great lights. There are several mounting options.

That being said...unless you're going to be doing 2 a.m. door breaching I'd skip it and go with something like night sights or EOtech. It's yours so do what you want...most do.

If you're using it for home defense I'd recommend putting night lights in your home to back light any intruders and then using verbal communication to identify them. Of course if they are knocking your door down or busting through the window and aren't wearing firemen's gear you can go to work.

Just don't go overboard on the tactical stuff...don't become this guy:

lol, that's hilarious!

no, I dont accessorize my firearms. this would be the first accessory i'd ever add to any of my firearms. I was thinking of getting night sights but it wouldnt really help me since it only illuminates the sights- not the target. that would be good for outdoors.

i just need a quick temporary solution for indoors until i can afford a better solution like the night vision recommended earlier

Check out this one:

Cheaper Than Dirt has several light/mount options...Get their catalogue.

Add a Surefire or Streamlight TLR-1 to the left side (for a righty)...operate with left thumb.

And yes, there are times when a weapon mounted light is very handy...it gives you another option and it allows you to identify your target. If you don't want to give away your position under certain situations, don't use it...

Also my favorite tritium front sight is Meprolight...I don't recommend any rear one--too close to your eye and blurry.

I second Bright Flashlights. Calvin was recommended highly on AR15.com and he was helpful in selecting a light. I got a pentagon LED which I use as my primary house light and have the option of mounting it on my AR if necessary. He also has killer prices as well.
